How the overlap is computed
The checker runs the same arithmetic as the overlap endpoint of the API, on the same stored data. Nothing is estimated from an index name or a category: every figure comes from the list of holdings the fund house itself publishes, and the steps below say exactly what is compared and what is left out.- Weighting basis: the latest published holdings snapshotEach fund contributes the top holdings of its most recent successful snapshot, with the weight the issuer prints for each line. The snapshot date is the fund's
dataAsOf; it is shown on the fund page and in the worked example below, so you always know which portfolio date the comparison is based on. - Security matching by normalised holding nameFund houses spell the same company differently. Before comparing, every holding name is upper-cased, punctuation is dropped and corporate suffixes and share-class markers (Inc, Corp, PLC, Ltd, AG, SA, Class A, ADR, ORD…) are removed, giving one key per issuer. “Apple Inc” and “APPLE INC.” therefore match; two lines of the same issuer inside one fund are summed. ISINs of the underlying securities are not used, so two share classes of the same issuer count as one company.
- Holdings without weights count as emptySome issuers publish their largest positions as names only. Such a fund is matched by name, so the shared names are still listed, but its overlap is reported as
nullrather than as 0%: the figure cannot be measured, which is not the same as no overlap. The fund is listed undernamesOnlyin the API response. - Substitute baskets are not comparedA synthetic, swap-based ETF holds a basket of collateral that backs the swap, not the index it tracks. Its holdings say nothing about its exposure, so they are treated as an empty portfolio, the fund appears under
excludedand every pair involving it carriescomparable: false. Its sector and country tables, which describe the index, are unaffected and are what the look-through tool uses. - Overlap = sum of min(weight in A, weight in B)For each shared key the smaller of the two weights is taken, and these minima are added. Identical portfolios give 100%; disjoint ones give 0%. This is the common-holdings measure most overlap tools use, and it is symmetric: A against B equals B against A.
- The result is a lower boundOnly disclosed positions can be matched. An ETF usually publishes its whole portfolio, an active fund often only its top ten, so the
disclosedshare of each fund tells you how much of the portfolio was visible. Positions that are not published cannot add to the overlap, so the true figure can only be higher than the one shown. - At most 25 shared holdings are listedThe shared lines are sorted by their counted weight and the list is capped at 25 per pair. The overlap percentage and the shared count are computed over every matched holding, so the cap only shortens the table, not the figure.
Worked example
iShares Core MSCI World UCITS ETF (IE00B4L5Y983) against State Street® SPDR® MSCI World UCITS ETF (Acc) (IE00BFY0GT14), from the holdings snapshots FundFacts currently stores (holdings as of iShares Core MSCI World UCITS ETF: September 28, 2026; State Street® SPDR® MSCI World UCITS ETF (Acc): September 29, 2026). The first fund discloses 9 matchable holdings covering 27.65% of its portfolio, the second 9 covering 27.66%.9 holdings are shared and the sum of the smaller weight over each of them gives an overlap of 27.52%. Because the sum runs only over the disclosed positions, the true overlap of the two portfolios is at least that figure.| Shared holding | Weight in IE00B4L5Y983 | Weight in IE00BFY0GT14 | Counted (min) |
|---|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA | 5.78% | 5.77% | 5.77% |

How it works
How is ETF overlap calculated? For every holding that appears in both funds, we take the smaller of its two portfolio weights and add them up. A 100% overlap would mean identical portfolios; 0% means no shared positions. Holdings are matched on the issuer name, so the same company is recognised across fund houses.
Why is the overlap a lower bound?Funds disclose their holdings differently: ETFs usually publish the full portfolio, active funds often only their top ten. When a fund publishes part of its portfolio, positions that are not visible cannot be matched, so the true overlap can only be higher than the figure shown. The tool tells you how much of each portfolio was visible.
Which funds can I compare?Any fund or ETF that has already been loaded into FundFacts. If an ISIN is not available yet, load it once through the API with a free key and it will appear here within the hour. The API's overlap endpoint compares up to 1,000 funds at once.
Is a high overlap bad?Not by itself. Two global equity ETFs tracking similar indices are expected to overlap heavily; holding both simply does not add diversification. This tool describes the portfolios; it does not give investment advice.
Built on the overlap endpoint of FundFacts API. To see what a set of funds adds up to rather than what two of them share, use the portfolio look-through. Fund names are used to identify the products; FundFacts is independent of every fund house. Nothing here is investment advice.Keep reading
