Morningstar API alternatives for developers (2026)

Morningstar is the reference for fund ratings, analyst research and portfolio X-Ray over a global universe, and its Direct Web Services API is sold through a licence with no public price. Without that contract: FundFacts API for European UCITS funds and ETFs by ISIN with KID costs and the 1–7 risk indicator, EODHD for global ETFs with prices and full holdings, Intrinio or Finnhub for enterprise ETF data, FMP or Twelve Data when prices come first, and OpenFIGI to map identifiers. None of them replaces Morningstar's ratings or research.Published October 6, 2026

What Morningstar is the reference for

Morningstar Direct Web Services offers Investment Details, Screener, Portfolio Analysis and X-Ray, Portfolio Optimizer, Time Series and AI Insights APIs, to search, sort and analyse over 300,000 investments. Its MCP server, listed in Claude's connector directory, adds fund holdings (top 10 to 100), X-Ray, screening and analyst research tools to Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot and Perplexity, with a licensed Morningstar account.

There is no public price, no free tier and no self-serve sign-up: the product page offers a meeting or a call back. That is the gap the alternatives below fill, each for part of the job.

Alternatives by need

  • The factsheet facts of European UCITS funds by ISIN, self-serve: FundFacts API. Fees, KID costs, the 1–7 SRI, top holdings with sector and country weights, returns and the as-of date, read from each fund house's documents. Free gives 15 lookups a month for personal use, Starter is $9.99 a month for 500 requests, and commercial use starts on Pro at $49 (VAT included). Portfolio look-through and overlap come with Pro, Scale and Enterprise; client PDF factsheets from the same data. No prices and no ratings.
  • Global ETFs with prices and full holdings, on a budget: [EODHD](https://eodhd.com). ISIN search, an ongoing-charge field and an MCP server for €59.99 a month, on a personal-use plan; commercial internal use starts at €399 a month.
  • Enterprise ETF data with European coverage: [Intrinio](https://intrinio.com) or [Finnhub](https://finnhub.io). Intrinio's Enterprise tier (from $1,250 a month) lists 12,000+ European ETFs with a UCITS flag; Finnhub takes ISINs on every fund endpoint and returns EU EET data, with global coverage on enterprise pricing.
  • Prices first, fund data as an extra: [FMP](https://site.financialmodelingprep.com) or [Twelve Data](https://twelvedata.com). FMP has fund profiles from $29 and holdings from $139 a month, and requires a licence agreement to display data. Twelve Data adds real-time prices and its own fund ratings, with fund endpoints on the $999 Ultra tier and ISIN as a paid add-on.
  • Mapping ISINs to tickers and FIGIs: [OpenFIGI](https://www.openfigi.com). Free and rate-limited, with no fund data; it pairs with any of the above.

When to stay with Morningstar

  • Ratings and analyst research are part of what you show or sell. No API here licenses Morningstar's ratings; Twelve Data's fund ratings are its own.
  • You need portfolio X-Ray and the Portfolio Optimizer across funds, ETFs and stocks under one licence.
  • You need one global universe, 300,000+ investments, rather than a European or US subset.
  • You already hold a licence: its MCP server brings the same data to Claude, ChatGPT and Copilot.

Many teams keep both: the licence for ratings and research, and a cheaper API for the factual fields on fund pages, screeners and client reports. The FundFacts API vs Morningstar comparison goes field by field, and the short answer says what FundFacts API does and does not replace.

Frequently asked questions

Does Morningstar have a public API?

Morningstar sells Direct Web Services, a set of fund and investment APIs, and an MCP server, both to licensed clients. Its pages publish no price and offer a meeting or a call back instead of a self-serve sign-up.

How much does the Morningstar API cost?

Morningstar does not publish a price for Direct Web Services; it is quoted by its sales team. The MCP server requires a licensed Morningstar account.

What is a cheaper alternative to Morningstar data?

For the factsheet facts of European UCITS funds by ISIN, FundFacts API (free plan, paid from $9.99 a month). For global ETFs with prices and full holdings, EODHD at €59.99 a month. To map identifiers only, OpenFIGI, free. None includes Morningstar's ratings or research.

Is there a free alternative to the Morningstar API?

For a start, yes: FundFacts API's Free plan gives 15 lookups a month for personal use, Alpha Vantage's free key returns US ETF profiles with holdings and expense ratios, TickerInside is free for US ETFs, and OpenFIGI maps ISINs for free. None replaces Morningstar's ratings.

Which alternative provides Morningstar ratings?

None. Morningstar's ratings and analyst research are its licensed products. Twelve Data returns its own performance, risk and return ratings for mutual funds; they are not Morningstar's.

Is there an alternative to Morningstar X-Ray?

For look-through of a portfolio of funds: FundFacts API's POST /portfolio returns the combined sector, country and holdings weights for UCITS funds (Pro, Scale and Enterprise); Intrinio's MCP has an ETF X-Ray workflow on Enterprise data; TickerInside's free look_through tool covers US ETFs.

What can replace Morningstar Direct Web Services for European funds?

FundFacts API for UCITS funds and ETFs by ISIN with KID costs and the SRI, self-serve; Intrinio (12,000+ European ETFs) or Finnhub (global funds, EU EET data) on enterprise plans. Keep Morningstar for ratings, research and its global universe.
