# Top holdings (Top 10 holdings, Largest positions, Holdings list)

> Top holdings are a fund's largest positions by portfolio weight, usually the ten biggest, as published in its factsheet or holdings file at a stated date.

**Top holdings** are the largest positions in a fund's portfolio ranked by weight, most often the top ten, as disclosed in the [factsheet](https://fundfactsapi.com/glossary/factsheet) or monthly holdings file. Each entry gives the security name, its percentage of net assets and, in better disclosures, the security's own [ISIN](https://fundfactsapi.com/glossary/isin). The combined weight of the top ten is a quick concentration gauge: it may be under 15% for a broad global index fund and above 50% for a concentrated active equity fund.

ETFs typically publish their full holdings daily; actively managed funds usually disclose only the top ten monthly, with the full list appearing in semi-annual reports.

## Why it matters

Holdings tell you what a fund actually owns rather than what its name suggests. They are the raw material for [portfolio look-through](https://fundfactsapi.com/glossary/look-through), for overlap analysis between funds, for concentration limits in compliance monitoring and for explaining performance to clients. Many global and US equity funds share the same largest positions, so overlap between apparently different products is common.

## In the API

The holdings list is returned as `topHoldings`, with the total position count and a concentration summary alongside.

```json
{
  "topHoldings": [
    { "name": "Example Corp", "weight": 4.9, "isin": "US0000000001" },
    { "name": "Sample Holdings plc", "weight": 3.7 }
  ],
  "keyFacts": { "holdings": 1350 },
  "profile": { "concentration": "diversified" }
}
```

Example values. Weights are percentages of net assets as of `dataAsOf`; `isin` is present only when the fund house publishes it. See the [ETF holdings API](https://fundfactsapi.com/blog/etf-holdings-api) guide for aggregation code.

## Common pitfalls

- For synthetic ETFs the listed holdings may be the substitute basket, not the index. Check the [replication method](https://fundfactsapi.com/glossary/replication-method).
- Funds of funds list underlying funds, so a second level of look-through is needed to reach securities.

## About FundFacts API

FundFacts turns any fund or ETF ISIN into one dated factsheet (fees and KID costs, the 1–7 risk indicator, holdings, sector and country exposure, returns) read from the fund house's own documents: as a client-ready PDF under your firm's name for advisers and wealth managers, as JSON through its API for developers, or inside ChatGPT and Claude through its MCP server.

FundFacts works inside ChatGPT and Claude as a connector (a remote MCP server): ask about any fund or ETF by ISIN, ticker or name and the assistant answers from FundFacts' dated figures, fees, risk, holdings, exposure and returns, with fund cards, side-by-side comparisons, holdings overlap and portfolio look-through.
