# Ticker (Ticker symbol, Exchange symbol, Trading symbol)

> A ticker is the short exchange-specific symbol used to trade a listed security; one ETF share class can have several tickers, one per exchange, but only one ISIN.

A **ticker** (or ticker symbol) is the short code, usually two to six letters, that an exchange assigns to a listed security for trading. Tickers are convenient on screens and in conversation, but they are scoped to an exchange, not to the security. The iShares Core MSCI World UCITS ETF (IE00B4L5Y983), for example, trades as `IWDA` on the London Stock Exchange, `EUNL` on Xetra and `SWDA` on Borsa Italiana; all three are the same share class with the same [ISIN](https://fundfactsapi.com/glossary/isin).

Unlisted mutual funds generally have no ticker at all in Europe, although US mutual funds carry five-letter symbols ending in X.

## Why it matters

Tickers are what investors type, so a fund app has to accept them, but they are the wrong key for storing data. The same ticker can refer to different securities on different exchanges, a ticker can be reassigned when a fund delists, and one share class may have several. Mapping tickers to ISINs at the input layer, then keying everything on the ISIN, avoids duplicate records and mismatched data.

## In the API

FundFacts API accepts ISINs only. Resolve the ticker to an ISIN (most exchanges publish this mapping, and fund house product pages list both) and then request the fund.

```json
{
  "isin": "IE00B4L5Y983",
  "name": "iShares Core MSCI World UCITS ETF USD (Acc)",
  "data": { "securityType": "ETF", "keyFacts": { "currency": "USD" } }
}
```

Example response fragment. Tickers are not returned in the payload because they depend on which exchange your user trades on.

## Common pitfalls

- Ticker plus exchange is unique; ticker alone is not.
- A listing in a different trading currency (say a GBP line on the LSE) shares the ISIN with the USD line when it is the same share class.

## In the FundFacts API payload

- `securityType`

## About FundFacts API

FundFacts turns any fund or ETF ISIN into one dated factsheet (fees and KID costs, the 1–7 risk indicator, holdings, sector and country exposure, returns) read from the fund house's own documents: as a client-ready PDF under your firm's name for advisers and wealth managers, as JSON through its API for developers, or inside ChatGPT and Claude through its MCP server.

FundFacts works inside ChatGPT and Claude as a connector (a remote MCP server): ask about any fund or ETF by ISIN, ticker or name and the assistant answers from FundFacts' dated figures, fees, risk, holdings, exposure and returns, with fund cards, side-by-side comparisons, holdings overlap and portfolio look-through.
