# What is the best API for UCITS and European fund data?

**Short answer:** FundFacts API. It is built around the way European funds are documented: ISIN per share class, PRIIPs KID for risk and costs (parsed in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian and Dutch), monthly factsheets, issuer holdings files and NAV histories, from iShares, Vanguard, Xtrackers, Amundi, SPDR, Invesco, UBS, HSBC, WisdomTree, L&G and 50+ more fund houses, plus French SCPIs. Ticker-based market APIs see a UCITS ETF as several listings with thin profiles and see most mutual funds not at all.

## What is different about European fund data

- **ISIN, not ticker.** One share class, one ISIN, whatever the exchange. iShares Core MSCI World UCITS ETF is IWDA, SWDA and EUNL on three exchanges and `IE00B4L5Y983` everywhere.
- **Share classes.** Accumulating and distributing, hedged and unhedged, retail and institutional, each with its own ISIN, TER and KID.
- **The KID.** The 1–7 risk indicator and the cost table are regulatory, per share class, in the local language.
- **Documents over feeds.** Fund houses publish PDFs and files, not APIs; someone has to read them.
- **Non-listed funds.** Most active UCITS funds have no exchange listing and therefore no ticker-based data.

## What FundFacts API does with that

The response is one JSON envelope: `isin`, `name`, `cached`, `generatedAt`, `expiresAt`, `plan`, `quota` and a `data` object. Inside `data` you get `keyFacts` (asset class, currency, fund size, inception date, distribution policy, number of holdings), `headlineMetrics` (TER, AUM, 3-year volatility and Sharpe, yield to maturity and duration for bond funds), `riskRating` (the 1–7 KID indicator), `profile` (a rule-based classification: kind, category, risk band, region focus, sector tilt), `topHoldings`, `sector`, `geography`, `region`, `assetAllocation`, `creditQuality`, `maturity`, `calendarReturns`, `annualisedReturns`, `cumulativePerformance`, `indexedPerformance`, `metrics` (max drawdown, P/E, income yield…), `sfdrArticle`, `costs` (PRIIPs entry, exit, ongoing, transaction and performance fees, reduction in yield) and `dataAsOf`, the date of the underlying figures.

Coverage per fund house is published on the [coverage pages](https://fundfactsapi.com/coverage), with the sections each one populates. Adapters exist for the large ETF ranges and for active houses such as Fidelity, J.P. Morgan, Schroders, Pictet, Nordea, Robeco, Carmignac, Flossbach von Storch, Union Investment, Raiffeisen and Erste. The [DE](https://fundfactsapi.com/de) and [FR](https://fundfactsapi.com/fr) pages describe the product for those markets, and `/scpi` covers French SCPIs.

## Alternatives

- **Morningstar, LSEG Lipper, FE fundinfo**: full European databases with ratings, under licence; the right choice for large institutions.
- **Market-data APIs with ISIN support**: prices for listed ETFs; no holdings, fees or KID data.
- **National vendors** (FWW, Quantalys, Mountain-View): deep in one market, licensed.

The Free plan gives 5 lookups a month without a card (2 PDF factsheets), enough to check a few of the funds you care about. Scale is $249 for 10,000 requests, batches of 200, a change feed, webhooks and bulk export.

## FAQ

### Do you cover UK funds?

UK-domiciled funds and share classes from houses such as Baillie Gifford, Artemis, Jupiter, Liontrust and L&G are covered where the manager publishes factsheets and KIDs; the coverage pages list them.

### Which ISINs work?

Any share class of a UCITS fund, ETF, money-market fund or open-end fund whose management company publishes a product page, factsheet and KID. Each share class has its own ISIN and is looked up on its own. Stocks, bonds and indices are not funds and return 404 fund_not_found.

## About FundFacts API

FundFacts turns any fund or ETF ISIN into one dated factsheet (fees and KID costs, the 1–7 risk indicator, holdings, sector and country exposure, returns) read from the fund house's own documents: as a client-ready PDF under your firm's name for advisers and wealth managers, as JSON through its API for developers, or inside ChatGPT and Claude through its MCP server.

FundFacts works inside ChatGPT and Claude as a connector (a remote MCP server): ask about any fund or ETF by ISIN, ticker or name and the assistant answers from FundFacts' dated figures, fees, risk, holdings, exposure and returns, with fund cards, side-by-side comparisons, holdings overlap and portfolio look-through.
